What is a Diamond Certificate?

A diamond certificate verifies each diamond’s specifications, including its colour grade, carat weight, clarity grade and cut grade. You should never buy a diamond without a diamond certificate. The most well-known grading laboratories are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the American Gem Society (AGS) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI).
A diamond's cost depends upon objective characteristics popularly known as the 4C's: Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat. The relationship between these four characteristics determines the value of a diamond. Although it is commonly assumed that carat is the most important member of the 4C's, colour, cut and clarity have a much greater impact on the appearance of a diamond.

Conflict-Free Diamonds - Our Guarantee

At Rainbow Gems, we understand that our customers care where their diamonds come from, and we share that concern with you. Every diamond we sell is certified conflict-free in compliance with the Patriot Act, the Kimberley Process, and United Nations resolutions. Our internal guidelines exceed these government requirements: we have binding contracts with our suppliers which guarantee that the diamonds they offer to us for sale comply with all applicable laws and are certified conflict-free. We only purchase polished diamonds from sources which are members of the professional diamond trade.

Kimberley Process Compliance and America's Patriot Act

The Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS) was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003 to preclude diamonds associated with conflict from entering the diamond market. All KPCS Governments must certify that rough diamonds derive from sources known to be conflict-free. To extend the KPCS to polished diamonds, the World Diamond Council established a System of Warranties to guarantee that polished diamonds derive from a conflict-free rough source. Polished diamonds sold in the U.S. must adhere to the Patriot Act and sanctions by the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. Every U.S. dealer must maintain Kimberley compliance or be subject to penalties from Homeland Security, the U.S. Justice Department, and the U.S. Treasury.

Natural Diamond Warranty

The diamonds sold by Rainbow Gems are made of 100% authentic untreated natural colour diamonds of a consistently high quality and value unless clearly stated otherwise. Independent laboratory certificates from GIA, EGL, AGS, HRD, IGI or ARGYLE are obtainable upon request for all diamonds however additional charges may apply.
This warranty gives customers specific legal rights. They may also have additional rights, which vary from country to country. For additional information on how to obtain our warranty service, please contact our Customer Service Department at: info@rainbowgems.hk
Blood diamonds are a serious social and moral issue that plagues the world today. Rainbow Gems does not sell, endorse, trade or otherwise engage with blood diamonds, in any form or context.

What are Blood Diamonds?

Conflict diamonds, sometimes called blood diamonds, are diamonds sold by rebel and terrorist groups to fund armed conflicts and rebellions against legitimate governments. During the last 15 years, the illicit trade of blood diamonds has been most prevalent in central and West African nations, and affected mainly Sierra Leone, Angola, Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo and the Ivory Coast. In all of these countries, citizens have been terrorized, and many times killed, by groups in control of the local diamond trade. Human rights organizations link no less than four million deaths to the trade in conflict diamonds.

How did the World Handle the Issue of Blood Diamonds?

The international diamond industry was eager to assure consumers they can buy a diamond knowing its history is untainted by bloodshed. Therefore, with the agreement between dozens of governmental and non-governmental agencies, representing all the major countries who have agreed to prevent the trade of diamonds that are being used to fund violent actions in Africa, the created the KPCS.
In 2000, the South African countries known to have legitimate diamond trade began a campaign to track the origins of all rough diamonds. This campaign eventually resulted in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme (KPCS), an international effort to eliminate the trade of conflict diamonds.

How to Avoid Buying Blood Diamonds

There is no quality difference between legitimate and conflict diamonds. They cannot be differentiated once the stones are cut and polished. So the question remains – how can you avoid purchasing conflict diamonds and inadvertently supporting the continuation of brutal oppression?
First of all, always purchase diamonds from a reputable Diamantaire. Be sure to ask where the diamonds came from and ask to see the diamond's certificate that details specific information about the stone. Be suspicious about unusually low prices, and try to avoid purchasing diamonds from countries that neighbour known diamond smuggling states. Demanding to know that the diamonds are conflict-free sends a strong consumer message that you will not support an industry that is funding violence against the population and against legitimate governments.

3. Risk assessment: Rainbow Gems (HK) Ltd conduct a risk assessment of their business to identify and assess the money laundering and terrorist financing risks associated with their operations.
4. Employee training: Rainbow Gems (HK) Ltd is providing AML/CFT training to their employees to ensure they are aware of their obligations under the AML/CFT program and can effectively detect and identify potential red flags. We also require all employees to report any suspicious activity to our Compliance team.
5. Reporting: Rainbow Gems (HK) Ltd have procedures in place for reporting suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.
In addition to the above measures, Rainbow Gems (HK) Ltd also implement strong internal controls, such as segregation of duties and regular audits, to ensure the integrity of their AML/CFT program.
We understand that complying with AML/CFT regulations can be complex, and we are committed to working with you to ensure that you understand your obligations and can comply with our program. We may ask you to provide additional information or documentation, and we may also ask you to update your information periodically.
Overall, implementing an effective AML/CFT program is essential for Rainbow Gems (HK) Ltd to protect their business from being used for illegal activities and to maintain the integrity of the diamond industry.

B

Implementing AML/CFT measures can be challenging for diamond companies, and some common challenges they may face include:
1. Complex supply chain: The diamond industry has a complex supply chain, with multiple intermediaries involved in the production and sale of diamonds. This complexity can make it difficult to identify and assess the risks of money laundering and terrorist financing.
2. Lack of awareness: Some diamond companies may not fully understand the risks associated with money laundering and terrorist financing or may underestimate the effectiveness of AML/CFT measures in preventing these activities.
3. Limited resources: Implementing an effective AML/CFT program can require significant time, effort, and resources, which some diamond companies may not have the capacity to dedicate.
4. Regulatory requirements: Diamond companies must comply with a range of regulatory requirements related to AML/CFT, which can be complex and vary across different jurisdictions.
5. Lack of industry standards: Although there are some industry-specific guidelines and initiatives related to AML/CFT in the diamond industry, there are no widely accepted industry standards for AML/CFT measures.
6. Limited cooperation between stakeholders: Collaboration and information sharing between stakeholders in the diamond industry, including governments, regulators, and industry associations, can be limited, which can make it difficult to implement effective AML/CFT measures.
Overcoming these challenges requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders in the diamond industry, including diamond companies, governments, regulators, and industry associations, to work together to develop and implement effective AML/CFT measures.

Legitimate Diamonds – Political and Ethical Benefits

There are strong moral and political reasons to avoid buying blood diamonds. Diamond communities in Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo, for instance, are not currently benefiting from the sale of diamonds. Helping those governments build a respectable diamond trade will contribute to their countries' economic growth and to the quality of life of their citizens. Conflict diamonds damage this process and lead to violence and suppression of basic human rights and freedoms.
A conflict diamond symbolizes hatred and oppression. Avoid purchasing blood diamonds and be sure you are buying a conflict-free precious-gem. You will find it easy, and most importantly, ethical.

Eye Clean Diamonds

What Are Eye Clean Diamonds?

Rainbow Gems considers a diamond eye clean if the diamond appears to be free of inclusions when viewed face up in daylight (or fluorescent lighting) by the naked eye (with 20/20 vision) from a relatively short distance (6-12 inches).
The concept of an eye clean diamond varies slightly in definition from retailer to retailer, but three major factors influence the definition of eye clean diamonds:
  • Distance and point of reference
  • The lighting under which the diamond is evaluated
  • The vision of the viewer
According to GIA and AGS, diamonds that are considered Flawless (FL), Internally Flawless (IF), Very Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) and Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) are considered eye clean.
On the other hand, Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) diamonds may or may not be eye clean. They need to be assessed individually to see if they are a good value.
Included (I1, I2 and I3) diamonds are considered non eye clean.

What is a cookie?

Cookies are computer files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to your computer or mobile device when you visit a website. Cookies can then be sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit, or to another website that recognizes that cookie. Cookies are widely used in order to make websites work, or to work more efficiently, as well as to provide information to the owners of the site.
Cookies do lots of different jobs, like letting you navigate between pages efficiently, remembering your preferences, and generally improving the user experience. Cookies may tell us, for example, whether you have visited our Site before or whether you are a new visitor.
There are two broad categories of cookies:
  • First party cookies, served directly by us to your computer or mobile device.
  • Third party cookies, which are served by a third party on our behalf. We use third party cookies for functionality, performance / analytics, and social media purposes.
Cookies can remain on your computer or mobile device for different periods of time. Some cookies are 'session cookies', meaning that they exist only while your browser is open. These are deleted automatically once you close your browser. Other cookies are 'permanent cookies', meaning that they survive after your browser is closed. They can be used by websites to recognize your computer when you open your browser and browse the Internet again.
We may also use web beacon or other similar cookie technologies. When a visitor accesses our Site, a non-identifiable notice of that visit is generated which may be processed by us or by third parties. These web beacons usually work in conjunction with cookies. If you don't want your cookie information to be associated with your visits to these pages, you can set your browser to turn off cookies as described further below. If you turn off cookies, web beacon and other technologies will still detect your visits to our Site; however, they will not be associated with information otherwise stored in cookies.

How do we use cookies?

We use cookies to:
  • track traffic flow and patterns of travel in connection with our Site;
  • understand the total number of visitors to our sites on an ongoing basis and the types of internet browsers (e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Internet Explorer) and operating systems (e.g. Windows or Mac) used by our visitors;
  • monitor the performance of our Site and to continually improve it; and
  • customize and enhance your online experience.
We, or our third-party mail service providers, may also include web beacons in e-mail messages to you in order to determine whether messages have been opened and links contained within them have been clicked.

What types of cookies do we use?

The types of cookies used by us and our partners in connection with the Site can be classified into one of three categories, namely 'essential website cookies', 'functionality cookies', and 'analytics and performance cookies'. We've set out some further information about each category, and the purposes of the cookies we and third parties set in the following table.

1. Cookies necessary for essential website purposes

These cookies are essential to provide you with services available through this Site and to use some of its features, such as access to secure areas. Without these cookies, services you have asked for, like transactional pages and secure login accounts, would not be possible.
